Over the weekend, news emerged that BP was circulating settlement agreements among coastal residents of Alabama and possibly other states, essentially requiring that "people give up the right to sue in exchange for payment of up to $5,000," the Alabama Press-Registerreported. Alabama's Attorney General Troy King protested and asked BP to stop distribution of the letters. (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/05/03/bp-oil-spill-waivers_n_560814.html)
Once again... really? I first thought this was some sort of sick joke, turns out to be true. BP has the spin control in full rotation. Working very hard for themselves!
Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano told "Good Morning America" today that it was unacceptable for BP to ask fishermen it hired to help with the cleanup of the Gulf oil spill to sign waivers that would limit the company's liability. Yup my fellow apes, they are out to screw over the hard working American people yet again, asking the fisherman that participate in the clean up to remain quiet about what they see, give up their right to sue in exchange for a $5000 payment.
CEO Tony Hayward told "GMA" this morning that the company has already put a stop to the practice.
"That was an early misstep George, frankly. We were using a standard contract. We've eliminated that," Hayward told George Stephanopoulos.
"An early misstep...",really Tony? How about you got caught with your hand in the cookie jar - hoping to get in there and take advantage of the very people whose livelihood you just killed - then got caught and now are apologizing yet again for your oversight. I'm here to tell you Tony, this looks really bad. I'd like to suggest a better approach. Pay the fisherman for their time, pay whoever you need to to do the best you can to clean up this mess you helped to create. Then STOP drilling in the Gulf of Mexico and convince your shareholders that they have a responsibility to the entire human race to develop energy that does not destroy the one and only planet we have. That my good Sir, will get you all the "success" in life that anyone could ever hope for. Knowing that your efforts contributed to the change that simply has to come. Just do the right thing Tony. The right thing for the people affected by this mess, not the right thing for your bottom line.
