Well, it appears that Florida Gov. Charlie Crist has changed his mind and decided that off shore drilling off the coast of Florida seems to be a bad idea..again.
Let's take a look at the history of the Florida's Governor many different views on the subject of offshore drilling since coming into office in 2006 shall we...
According to Politifact, during an interview with the St. Petersburg Times back in 2006 Crist was quoted as stating, "Offshore oil drilling, I'm adamantly opposed to it. I think a lot of that has to do with growing up here. I'm a Gulf Coast guy. ... I remember when I was in elementary school, we had an oil spill in Tampa Bay. You may recall that. I literally remember cleaning birds off when that happened."
Looks like you may have to do that again, Charlie!
Only two short years later with McCain running for president, a candidate that popularized the phrase "Drill, baby Drill", Crist was mentioned as a possible VP choice for this ticket and was quoted as saying, "We have to be sympathetic to the pocketbooks of Floridians and what they're paying at the pump for gas and balance that with any way that our state might be able to contribute in terms of resources to have a greater supply and therefore lower prices," Crist said. "I think an open-minded person understands that we ought to at least study offshore drilling."
hmmmm...what about those birds, Charlie?
The following week at a global climate change summit in Miami Crist stated, "We must have an open discussion without compromising Floridas sensitive ecosystems and natural beauty," Crist said of offshore drilling. "As I stated last week, only when we are able to do so far enough from Floridas coast, safe enough for our people and clean enough for our beaches, should we consider increasing our oil supply by drilling off Floridas shores. Let me repeat that far enough, safe enough and clean enough."
Well today, Crist is whistling a different tune as hundreds of thousands of gallons of crude oil is being pumped into the once Beautiful Gulf of Mexico, after an oil rig exploded off the coast of Louisiana. It appears that Charlie has changed his mind once again...
On NBC's "Meet the Press" Sunday Crist stated, When I flew over it on Tuesday and I saw the magnitude of this thing, it was unbelievable . . . it frightens me, if this doesnt make the case that we have got to go to clean energy . . . I dont know what does.
So much for "Drill, baby, Drill!" Welcome back, Charlie...we missed you!
