This one will get you apes going.....
We have all heard ofNational Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration(NOAA) we count on them to warn us of hurricanes, floods, tidal surges and other things weather related. We trust them to provide us with information that may save our lives and those of our loved ones. They also are stewards of the world's ocean and generally speaking a bunch of good ole apes.
Another government agency is the Mineral Management Service (MMS), their Mission Statement says this: "MMSs mission is to manage the ocean energy and mineral resources on the Outer Continental Shelf and Federal and American Indian mineral revenues to enhance public and trust benefits, promote responsible use, and realize fair value."
President Obama appointed several apes to help out over at MMS but for the most part, MMS is politically staffed by Bush appointees. You remember that guy right? He's the one that thought hard science was just a suggestion and that God would provide.... well his legacy lives on in the form of the goonies he appointed to the MMS. "Jeff Ruch, the head of the public-employee whistleblowing group (PEER), said that as in many other regulatory agencies, Obama political appointees in the Interior Department'snotoriously troubledMinerals Management Service (MMS) have not taken enough steps to reverse the anti-environmental and anti-science policies of the Bush years." Ok, so now we have all the players cast - let the drama begin.
Turns out that MMS created a report for President Obama related to the safety of offshore oil drilling. In this report they made a whole bunch of mistakes and omissions and used bad data to draw their conclusions (Conclusion as defined by the Bush administration - Manipulating the information to support whatever we want to do )
President Obama then used the "information" gathered by MMS to assist in making the decision to expand offshore drilling. (Bush strikes again...sigh, he really was a lousy leader)
An unlikely ally rides in from the horizon - NOAA - having read the "report" from MMS NOAA releases this report:
You should read it, or at least skim it, actually you know what? Since I'm such a nice ape, I'll tell you about some of the highlights, cause that's just the kind of ape I am.
Ok - Page 5 the plot starts to thicken:
Yup - NOAA said is was bad idea. Then they get to the really good stuff:
Here they very nicely tell the MMS that their data is bad and their conclusions are bad. They also note that their concern in regards to the capacity to respond to a spill.
Yup, the MMS went there - effectively stating that they didn't believe in climate change so of course they were not concerned about it. Long live the legacy of stupidity! The MMS just totally ignored the science that conflicts with it's goal.
The document from NOAA goes on to point-counterpoint the entire MMS document. They question it's methods, it's facts, and it's conclusions. NOAA states categorically that the references used in the MMS document are unclear and unsupported. They note many areas where the document ignores proven scientific facts.
The amount of corruption left over from the previous administration is still coming to light. The GOP only wants you to continue to consume and believe success in life revolves around accumulating wealth and possessions. They have nothing to offer the hard working ape, except maybe their distaste a great example is here(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0oHOUnQ0gYI), a video is worth 10,000 words.
