The Need for Affordable Rental Property is Growing
2009-04-21

With so many foreclosures and the surmounting number of Americans losing their homes, it should come as no big surprise that the next problem facing Americans will be the need for affordable rental property!

According to Massachusetts Rep. Barney Frank, a policy from the Bush Administration to help low-income families become homeowners became a large contributor to the mortgage crisis of today. He claims that in 2003 the amount of low-income families receiving mortgage loans started to rise and the number of Americans that could not pay their mortgage rose along with them. Looking at the stats, he believes that the two are connected.

So, what can we do about this next crisis? Frank believes that federal funding for affordable rental property has to be increased. Locally, in Hernando County, Florida, a draft Neighborhood Stabilization Plan has been drawn up, and part of the plan includes allocating over $1 million to provide rental assistance for low-income families.

With these types of plans, perhaps we can begin to solve the housing dilemma, and families will be able to stop worrying about whether or not they will have a home in the morning and start enjoying their time with their families again.
